Dr. Torchiana is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Partners HealthCare, an integrated not-for-profit academic health system founded by Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in 1994. Partners also includes McLean Hospital, the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network of post-acute institutional and home care services, six community hospitals, Neighborhood Health Plan (a non-profit health insurance company), and a community physician network. MGH and BWH are the largest hospital recipients of National Institutes of Health funding in the nation and in aggregate Partners total research budget is $1.4 billion. In the field of education, Partners is a principal teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School and operates the MGH Institute of Health Professions, a graduate school with 1,200 students in nursing and other allied-health professions. Dr. Torchiana graduated from Yale College in 1976, was a Churchill scholar at Cambridge University in 1977, and graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1981. He completed residencies in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at the MGH before joining the Department of Surgery in 1989. He became Chief of Cardiac Surgery at MGH in 1998 and Chairman and CEO of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization in 2003. His principal career interest has been to make healthcare better and more cost effective.
